One beautiful house for the whole group, two rental cars, and a region dense enough that everything worth seeing is a day trip. You cook some nights, eat out others, and set your own pace.
A premium small-group tour operator handles hotels, transport, guides, and the marquee access. You unpack once every couple nights and just show up.
Four strong bases, each chosen because a car is the right way to explore it and everything clusters within an easy drive. Example villas link out to real listings so you can see the actual houses and photos.
Why here: The most forgiving first choice. Wine country, storybook hilltowns, and full-blown art cities all sit 20–90 minutes from a farmhouse near Pienza or in Chianti. Roads are good, the driving is a pleasure, and there's a villa at every price point. If the group can't agree on anything else, Tuscany wins by default — and Rome's new nonstop from Seattle makes moving 8–10 people painless.
Verdict: Upper-mid on price, unbeatable on ease.
Why here: This is the purest "explore on your own" region on the list — the pueblos blancos aren't reachable by public transport, so a car turns them from a chore into the whole point. Base in a restored finca near Ronda and you're within reach of Moorish history, sherry country, dramatic gorge towns, and the coast. More distinctive than Tuscany, and noticeably better value.
Verdict: The value pick with the most character.
Why here: The lowest-stress option. Portugal has the easiest driving of the three (the Algarve's main motorway is now toll-free), the biggest inventory of 8–10-person pool villas, and the best prices. Golden beaches, dramatic sea caves, cliff-top towns, and sleepy hill villages — all within an easy drive, with 300+ days of sun a year. Best if the group's priority is relax by a pool, dip into adventures.
Verdict: Best value + easiest logistics.
Why here: The insider pick — an hour-plus south of Lisbon, where rice paddies meet pine dunes and design-forward villas hide down sandy lanes. It's stylish without being flashy, and it pairs beach days with real culture: UNESCO Évora, Arrábida's cliffs, Alentejo wineries, and Lisbon/Sintra all within reach. Best if the group wants somewhere a little more original than the usual names.
Verdict: The stylish, slightly-different choice.
At this budget the sweet spot is the premium-escorted tier — not ultra-luxury (which overshoots). The move for a friend group: privately "buy out" a departure so it's just your people.
Why it fits: Correct length, both countries, and priced so low that even after flights (~$1,000) and a private-group upgrade you stay comfortably in budget. Modeled on a group of 8 sharing one villa, 12 days, flying from Seattle. The villa trip is materially cheaper than a tour at the same comfort level because lodging splits eight ways.
Lean toward the Algarve (cheapest villas), disciplined dining, off-peak flights. It works — it just needs a little discipline.

Setenil de las Bodegas, Grazalema, Zahara — a slow driving day through the prettiest corner of Andalusia.
Pool, books, a village lunch. The whole point of a villa: nothing scheduled.
Bodega tour and tasting, maybe an Andalusian horse show. Designated drivers rotate.
The Alcázar, the cathedral, tapas crawl. Big enough to warrant one night in the city if the group wants it.
Down to Cádiz or the beaches — a change of scene, seafood, Atlantic light.
A cooking class at the villa, a hike in the Sierra de Grazalema, one more open day to do nothing well.
Return cars, fly out. (Or extend two days in Seville / Marbella if people want more.)
One 9-seat van holds 8 people or their luggage — not both. Plan on a van + a car (or two SUVs). Reserve automatics explicitly and early — Europe defaults to manual.
An International Driving Permit (~$20 from AAA, bring 2 photos). Italy will refuse the rental without it. Get one for each person who'll drive.
Restricted town centers with camera fines of €80–300, no tolerance. Park outside historic centers and walk in. (Andalusia & the Algarve are far more relaxed.)
Mid-September to early October, or late May to mid-June: warm, thinner crowds, and villas 30–50% cheaper than July–August. Book 6–9 months ahead regardless.
For 9–10 people, bathrooms matter more than bedrooms. Many "sleeps 8" villas have only 2 baths — a real friction point. I'll screen for this when I pull listings.
From Seattle, those two are the only nonstops — cleanest for moving a big group. Portugal and Andalusia are one connection; worth an open-jaw (fly into one city, out of another).
